About This Site
Mission
Move Aware is focused on increasing body awareness as a way to make life more enjoyable.
When it hurts to move it’s hard to think about anything else. Although we might not be conscious of it, there’s a lot that we do — or don’t do — that contributes to our chronic pain or discomfort.
Why are you hurting yourself?
The question, “Why are you hurting yourself?” might sound like something you’ve heard if you ever spent time on a playground as a kid, but take a moment to think about it. You can probably fix it yourself if you commit yourself to identifying the source of your pain. The body is capable of extraordinary healing given the right circumstances.
This site is my attempt to chronicle my efforts to increase my own body awareness and hopefully help you to do the same. I’ll be covering topics including:
- Biomechanics
- Breathing
- Soft Tissue Manipulation
- Strength Training
- Stress/Relaxation
- Stretching
- Posture
- …and especially self treatment for pain.
About Me
I’ve been a “computer guy” for most of my life, and my body reflects that. My shoulders slouch, my head hangs forward, and my lower back rounds when I sit in a chair. My physical fitness waxes and wanes; sometimes I’m active in martial arts and strength training, sometimes I sit around like a turd. Although I don’t look fat, I’m not very fit. My saving grace so far has been a naturally high metabolism that is fading during my journey through the third decade of life.
I intend to improve all of the above. Except the aging, of course.
That’s not me in the photo, by the way.
For the desk jockeys…
Because I work at a desk all day I’ll be paying special attention to:
- Ergonomics at your desk
- Ergonomics around the office
- Ways to avoid a sedentary lifestyle
I’m not a physical therapist or a doctor.
If you’d like to know how I ended up writing about this stuff, read My Story. My only credentials are my enthusiasm for the subject matter and my desire to improve my health as efficiently as I can. I have no medical training, and nothing on this site should take the place of advice from a doctor.
I’m always learning, and I hope that we can learn from each other. Please post comments and tell me what you think.
